Demolition Man

Review

A fast-paced platform shooter where you hunt a criminal in a futuristic city.

The SNES version of Demolition Man, developed by Alexandria Inc. and published by Acclaim/Virgin, was released in 1995. The original game was the 1995 SNES/Genesis title based on the 1993 film, with no earlier platform version.

About Demolition Man

Demolition Man adapts its 1993 film source material into a platform game. The narrative follows police officer John Spartan, who is revived from cryostasis in a future, pacifist society called San Angeles to recapture the criminal Simon Phoenix.

Gameplay involves navigating levels from a side-scrolling perspective, with some stages using an overhead view. Players control Spartan, confronting numerous enemies known as cryocons. The primary firearm can be supplemented by finding a shotgun or magnum, though ammunition for these is finite. Grenades, which operate separately from the guns, are also available as collectibles.

Simon Phoenix serves as a recurring boss encountered at the conclusion of stages, with these confrontations drawing from events in the film. A separate Sega CD release maintains the same levels and mechanics but incorporates video footage from the movie to provide context between stages.
