How to Play Classic Games Online
A simple guide to starting games, using controls, fullscreen mode, mobile play, and fixing common problems.
Many playable games on Classic Games DB can run directly in a modern web browser. In most cases, you do not need to install a separate emulator, browser extension, or additional software.
1. Choose a game
Browse games by platform, genre, series, release year, search results, or related-game recommendations. Open the game page and select the Play option when browser-based emulation is available.
Some titles may be available for information only and may not include a playable browser version.
2. Start the emulator
After opening the player, the emulator may take a few moments to initialize, especially on slower devices or when the game contains larger assets.
Click or tap inside the game area after it loads. This helps the browser give keyboard, controller, and audio focus to the emulator.
3. Check the controls
Controls may differ depending on the original system and the emulator used for that game. If a controls section is available on the game page, check it before you start playing.
Typical controls may include keyboard keys for the directional pad, action buttons, Start, and Select. Some emulators may also support compatible game controllers.
4. Use fullscreen mode
Use the fullscreen option when available if you prefer a larger playing area. You can normally leave fullscreen using the emulator control or your browser's standard fullscreen exit command.
On phones and tablets, landscape orientation often provides more space for both the game screen and on-screen controls.
5. Use a modern browser
For the best compatibility, use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. Browser-based emulators may rely on technologies such as JavaScript, WebAssembly, browser audio, fullscreen APIs, and local storage.
Very old browsers or heavily restricted browser configurations may prevent some games from loading or working correctly.
6. Playing on phones and tablets
Many classic games can be played on mobile devices using touch controls when supported. The experience can vary depending on the game and the original control scheme.
Games designed around only a few buttons often work well on touchscreens, while titles that require fast or precise input may be easier to play with a keyboard or compatible controller.
Common problems
- The game does not start
- Refresh the page and try again. Make sure JavaScript is enabled and check whether a browser extension, script blocker, or strict privacy setting is preventing the emulator from loading.
- The screen is blank or stuck while loading
- Wait briefly for the emulator to finish loading, then refresh the page if necessary. You can also try the game in another current browser.
- There is no sound
- Modern browsers often block automatic audio until you interact with the page. Click or tap inside the game player, then make sure your device volume is enabled and the browser tab is not muted.
- The keyboard does not control the game
- Click inside the game area first so the emulator receives keyboard focus. Also check the controls section because the assigned keys may differ between platforms.
- The game is running slowly
- Close unnecessary browser tabs or applications, disable battery-saving or low-power modes when possible, and try another current browser. Older or lower-powered devices may have difficulty with some emulators.
- My progress was not saved
- Save support varies by emulator and game. Browser data may also be lost if you clear site storage, use private browsing, change browsers, or switch devices.
- Touch controls are difficult to use
- Try rotating your device to landscape mode. For games that require precise or simultaneous button presses, a keyboard or compatible game controller may provide a better experience.
