Super Thunder Blade

Review
Also known as
スーパーサンダーブレード

A helicopter shooter alternating between behind-view and overhead perspectives to defeat bosses.

Super Thunder Blade was released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in Japan on October 29, 1988, and in North America in 1989. The original arcade game Thunder Blade was released in 1987, but Super Thunder Blade is a distinct Genesis version, so its original release year is 1988.

About Super Thunder Blade

Super Thunder Blade is a helicopter based shooter that continues the series established by its predecessor. Players control an armed helicopter equipped with both a cannon and missiles to engage a variety of hostile targets.

Each of the four stages is structured around two distinct combat phases. The initial phase presents a challenging behind-the-craft perspective where navigation requires avoiding both enemy attacks and environmental obstacles such as structures and cave walls. This segment typically concludes after encounters with minor boss enemies.

The stage culminates in a shift to an overhead view for a confrontation with a larger end boss. This consistent pattern of a navigation focused section followed by a boss battle defines the progression through the game.
