Crusader of Centy

Review
Also known as
Shin Sōseiki Ragnacenty Soleil 新創世記ラグナセンティ 라그나센티 신창세기

This overhead action game blends combat, puzzles, and light RPG exploration.

Crusader of Centy (known as Soleil in Europe and Shin Sōseiki Ragnacenty in Japan) was released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1994. It was the original game, not a port, so the original release year is also 1994.

About Crusader of Centy

Crusader of Centy is an overhead action game that incorporates puzzle-solving and light role-playing elements. Its gameplay structure is reminiscent of the Zelda series, but it introduces a distinctive mechanic centered on animal companions.

The protagonist is a fourteen-year-old boy named Corona from Soleil Town. His journey begins with traditional trials to become a swordsman, but it takes an unexpected turn when he loses the ability to communicate with humans. This leads him to forge connections with animals instead, gaining a more complex perspective on the world.

These animal allies are integral to progression, as equipping them modifies Corona's capabilities. For instance, partnering with a penguin can imbue his sword with ice-based properties. The game's setting is framed by a mythological backstory where light destroyed many primordial monsters, with the survivors now plotting to reclaim the world from their dark hiding places.
