Days of Thunder

Review

Race on 8 oval tracks, manage pit stops, and compete for position in this NASCAR adaptation.

Days of Thunder for NES was released in 1990 by Mindscape. The game is based on the 1990 film and was developed by Tiertex. No earlier release of this exact NES version exists.

About Days of Thunder

Days of Thunder adapts the NASCAR racing film into a game that simulates real-world circuits rather than directly following the movie's narrative. Players compete on eight oval tracks modeled after actual locations, each with distinct layouts that require different driving strategies.

The player controls a character based on the film's protagonist, racing against rivals who do not make pit stops. Managing pit crew actions during necessary stops is a key element, as delays there can cost track position. A qualifying system is integrated into the race structure.

This NES release presents the action from a third-person perspective. Success depends on learning each track's unique characteristics, as a fast line on one circuit may lead to a collision on another, making the gameplay challenging.
