This turn-based ASCII dungeon crawler tasks you with retrieving the Amulet of Yendor from a deadly, procedurally-generated labyrinth.

Rogue was originally developed in 1980 on Unix; the DOS version was released in 1984 by A.I. Design, matching the legacy year.

About Rogue

Rogue is a turn-based dungeon exploration game where the player's adventurer seeks the Amulet of Yendor from the Dungeon of Doom. The dungeon is presented using ASCII symbols for all elements, including the player, monsters, and the environment.

Each attempt begins with a freshly generated dungeon and item placement. The adventure starts on the top level and proceeds downward through increasingly challenging layouts, where monsters become more powerful. The player can improve their character by finding better equipment and gaining experience levels.

Defeat is permanent, requiring a complete restart. Twenty-six distinct monster types, each represented by a letter and possessing unique behaviors, inhabit the procedurally created levels, which are composed of interconnected rooms and passages.
