About Companions of Xanth

Companions of Xanth is a mouse-driven adventure game set in the pun-filled fantasy world from Piers Anthony's novel Demons Don't Dream. The plot involves two demons manipulating human champions, one of whom is Dug, a young man transported from our world after receiving a mysterious computer game.

Gameplay centers on inventory puzzles where solutions often rely on understanding wordplay. The interface dedicates over half the screen to location art, with command icons and an inventory panel along the edges. Interaction includes branching dialogues with characters encountered throughout the world.

The game's structure is divided into areas, some of which become inaccessible as the story progresses. While death can be undone, the design is challenging in parts; failing to collect essential items earlier can create unwinnable states. An early choice of a companion is critical, as only one selection allows the game to continue, while the others cause it to end prematurely. This companion frequently offers hints and puzzle solutions through conversation.
