Anvil of Dawn

Review
Also known as
黎明之砧

This solo dungeon crawler blends action combat with maze exploration to defeat an evil warlord.

Anvil of Dawn was developed by DreamForge and published by New World Computing for DOS in 1995; it was the original platform and no earlier release exists.

About Anvil of Dawn

Anvil of Dawn is a role-playing game where a single adventurer, selectable from several human and one lizard option, journeys to defeat a warlord. Its environments use a pseudo-3D presentation for dungeon navigation, recalling titles like Eye of the Beholder, while its real-time combat mechanics are more action-focused.

Progression relies on a learning by doing system rather than experience points, where repeated use of a skill or spell improves proficiency. Character advancement also comes from discovering new equipment, permanently enhancing statistics with potions, and learning spells across seven elemental disciplines.

The core gameplay loop involves navigating maze-like dungeons, which include locations such as castles and shipwrecks, while managing combat and environmental puzzles. Puzzles typically involve switches or inventory items. In battle, the player directly targets enemies with a selected weapon or spell.
