Obitus

Review

Explore a fantasy world in first-person, switching to side-scrolling combat to find a way home.

Obitus was developed by Scenario Developments and published by Psygnosis/Bullet-Proof Software. The SNES version was released in 1991, the same year as the original Amiga/Atari ST versions.

About Obitus

Obitus blends role-playing with action sequences, placing the player in the role of Wil Mason, a modern academic transported to the fantasy realm of Middlemere. His objective is to uncover the means of his arrival and find a path back home in a land divided by four warring brothers.

Exploration occurs through a first-person perspective, employing a smooth, scrolling rotation across eight directions rather than the more common four-direction snap. This fluid movement extends to forward motion, enhancing the three-dimensional impression of the environments.

Combat shifts to side-scrolling action segments where the player uses a bow against enemies, requiring evasion of incoming attacks. This style of gameplay is later adapted for castle exploration, incorporating movement in four cardinal directions.
