Virtua Racing

Review
Also known as
SEGA AGES: Virtua Racing Virtua Formula バーチャ レーシング

Race Formula-1 style cars on beginner, intermediate, or expert tracks in this pioneering 3D polygon racer.

Virtua Racing was originally released in arcades in 1992. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version was released in 1994.

About Virtua Racing

Virtua Racing presents a racing experience using polygon based three dimensional graphics, a first for Sega. Players control Formula 1 style vehicles across tracks of varying difficulty, competing with either a human opponent or computer controlled drivers.

The gameplay mechanics are designed for accessibility rather than simulation, offering straightforward controls. This approach is considered a foundational step toward later arcade style racing titles.

Its release on the Sega Genesis is notable for specialized hardware. The cartridge includes an integrated SVP chip to handle the three dimensional processing, a method comparable to technology used in contemporary Super Nintendo games.
