Rainbow Islands Extra presents a modified version of the Taito arcade title, offering both the standard game and this altered iteration. The core objective involves the human brothers Bub and Bob utilizing magical rainbows to liberate the Rainbow Islands from monster occupation.

This Extra variant is designed to be more challenging by redistributing enemy and boss placements. Creatures typically encountered in later stages appear earlier, a design approach reminiscent of a mode found in the series' first game. Players can select from three difficulty settings within the home console release.
