General Chaos

Review
Also known as
General Chaos: Daikonsen ジェネラル・カオス 大混戦

This squad RTS game features fast-paced, arcade-style battles controlling a five-soldier team.

General Chaos was developed by Game Refuge and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis in 1993. This is the original platform and earliest commercial release of the game.

About General Chaos

General Chaos frames its conflict as a war between two generals, with the red forces of General Havoc based in Viceria opposing the blue army of General Chaos from Moronica. The strategic objective involves advancing the frontline through successive victories until reaching and defeating the enemy in their own capital city.

Combat revolves around directing a squad of five soldiers, selected from distinct classes prior to each engagement. These include a medium-range Gunner, a long-range Launcher, a Grenade Chucker capable of arcing shots, and close-quarters specialists like the Scorcher with a flamethrower and the Blaster with dynamite. Players can choose from preset team compositions such as an Assault team, a Brute Force group, a two-soldier Commando unit, or a Demolition squad.

The control scheme is easy to grasp for most team types, utilizing separate buttons for firing at the nearest foe, moving to a selected point, and switching between squad members. Direct control shifts during soldier versus soldier melee encounters, which pause the wider battle and enter a dedicated fighting mode. Commandos operate under a different system where one soldier is steered directly and the other can be summoned.

Successful management requires considering factors like attack angles and engagement distances. Casualties are not always permanent, as downed soldiers may be revived by medics, a resource earned based on performance in each skirmish. The game supports multiplayer for up to four participants, who can choose to cooperate or compete against each other.
