Defender of the Crown

Review
Also known as
Conquering England DOTC Defender of the Crown: Obrońca Korony

Lead a Saxon knight to conquer medieval England through army management, jousting, and castle raids.

Defender of the Crown was originally released in 1986 for Amiga, Atari ST, and Commodore 64. The NES version was released in North America in 1989 by Ultra Games.

About Defender of the Crown

Defender of the Crown is set in a medieval England destabilized by the death of its king and the theft of the crown, leading to conflict between Saxon and Norman factions. The player assumes control of one of four Saxon knights, beginning with minimal forces and a single castle.

Victory requires the player to expand their military power and seize territories, ultimately needing to overcome three rival Norman lords. Alliances are not guaranteed, as conflict with other Saxon knights is also a possibility.

Beyond the core strategic conquest, the game incorporates specific events that influence progress. These include jousting tournaments, where success can yield land or renown, and castle raids undertaken to secure wealth or form a political marriage with a princess.
