Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves begins with the player character imprisoned in the city dungeons, subjected to whipping by the Sheriff's guards. The broader context is a kingdom in peril during King Richard's absence, leaving it under the oppressive rule of the Sheriff and the witch Mortianna.

The player's objective is to escape this captivity and then seek out allies within Sherwood Forest. The overarching mission involves both rescuing Maid Marian and ultimately liberating England from its tyrannical rulers.
