About Black

Black was one of those games you'd find on Flash portals in the mid-2000s, a straightforward shooter in a sea of browser-based experiments. It didn't have a big studio name attached, just a simple premise delivered directly to your web browser. You loaded it up, and it was immediately clear what you were there to do.

You control a lone operative, moving through a series of compact, abstract levels with the WASD keys. Your mouse aims the crosshair, and the left button fires whatever weapon you have equipped. The moment-to-moment play is about clearing rooms; you enter a space, and hostile red figures appear, requiring quick reflexes to eliminate. Your main objective is simply to kill every enemy on the level to progress. A bullet time mechanic, activated with the spacebar, lets you slow everything down for a crucial moment, which helps manage the often relentless pace. You can switch between several weapons, from pistols to shotguns, using the number keys. The difficulty comes from the sheer number of targets and the limited space to maneuver. It feels like a tense, methodical sweep, where a moment's hesitation means starting the level over.
