About NetWars

NetWars is a first-person space combat simulation developed by Novell to demonstrate the IPX networking features of NetWare. Players control a ship in three dimensions, using a radar display for spatial orientation while managing engine speed and engaging hostile craft with weapons fire.

The experience is divided into distinct single-player and networked multi-player components. Against computer opponents, progression occurs across eight stages of increasing difficulty, where objectives include eliminating a set quantity of alien vessels and defending specific targets. Four classes of enemy, identified as Pirate, Fighter, Guardian, and Commander, are encountered. Successful performance is recorded in a permanent high score table.

For direct competition, the multi-player mode supports sessions with up to four additional participants via IPX protocol. In these matches, the goal shifts to destroying other players' ships to accumulate points based on hits landed. This mode also introduces a Cloaking Device as an available tactical option. During play, collecting satellites provides benefits such as shield restoration or ship modification.
