The Atlas places the player in a contractual arrangement with the Portuguese crown during the 1400s. The core objective involves exploration to the south, with a five year timeframe and a specific annual financial obligation to the king.

This exploration forms the basis of a trade and discovery simulation. While commercial activity using found goods is permitted, any geographical or strategic knowledge acquired becomes the exclusive property of the monarchy, defining a key constraint within the game's historical business premise.
