About Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow is a side scrolling platform game featuring Disney's Donald Duck as a detective. His investigation into a missing idol leads him through environments populated by voodoo themed adversaries.

Gameplay involves managing two distinct forms with separate abilities. The standard Maui Mallard employs a bug gun, using various insect based ammunition that can be combined for stronger attacks. A transformation into Ninja Maui is enabled by collecting Yin Yang coins, which also act as a fuel for this state.

As Ninja Maui, the character wields a bo staff for combat and gains enhanced mobility. This includes using the staff to climb between walls and to swing from specific environmental points, allowing access to new areas. The necessity to maintain a supply of coins for this transformation adds a resource management element to the adventure.

A Game Boy version of the title exists, noted for having a modified level layout and fewer hidden elements compared to other releases.

When you play as the Ninja, you can perform much more than Maui
nice lightning-effects
The mansion in the SNES version does not feature the spitting pirate faces from the Genesis/Mega Drive version.
The hand-drawn motion blur effect of ninja’s spinning bo.
Maui temporarily shrunk by a voodoo spell. No Mario mushrooms in this game.
Occasional repeated tiles - it is SNES after all.
Underwater, Maui gets to use his bug gun as propulsion.
Either that's an eyeball-shaped planet, or someone's eye has popped out of surprise seeing that Maui made it this far in his challenging adventure.
An example of mild physical comedy peculiar to the Disney style.
