Dark Castle

Review

Navigate 14 zones in a side-view adventure, using 360-degree rock throws to defeat enemies and confront the Black Knight.

Dark Castle was originally released for Macintosh in 1986. The Sega Genesis version was released in 1991 by Electronic Arts.

About Dark Castle

Dark Castle is a side-view action game where the player controls an adventurer on a quest to defeat the Black Knight in his haunted house. The objective is to end the misery he has brought to the land.

Progression occurs across 14 zones that become challenging. The player navigates single-screen areas containing environmental features like ropes, cages, and trapdoors. Movement between these screens is managed through hub areas where selecting a door provides access.

Combat involves throwing rocks, a weapon with a full 360-degree aiming range. This mechanic encourages a deliberate pace. Various walking, flying, and hovering enemies populate the stages, and they frequently respawn after being defeated.
