Monster Truck Rally presents a collection of distinct driving challenges, each with its own specific objective. Players can tackle these events individually or as a continuous sequence in a rally format.

The challenges vary significantly in their demands. Some test raw speed on straightaways or hilly terrain, while others introduce obstacles like rising drawbridges or waterlogged bogs. Several events focus on feats of strength, such as pulling a progressively weighted sled or dragging an opposing truck in a tug of war. Another task involves driving over lines of parked cars to crush them.

Beyond the predefined events, the game includes a feature for track creation. Players can design their own courses or generate one randomly, adding a layer of customization to the experience.
