Parodius is a side scrolling shooter where players control one of four distinct aircraft, each with unique armaments. Its structure involves clearing seven stages, all of which must be completed to reach the conclusion, though the initial stage selection is flexible.
The title functions primarily as a humorous take on the Gradius series, while also incorporating elements from other games in the shoot em up genre. Every stage concludes with a boss encounter.
