About Gold Medal Challenge '92

Capcom's Gold Medal Challenge '92 is a sports simulation for the Nintendo Entertainment System based on the Barcelona Olympic Games. Players begin by selecting a country from a list of twelve to represent, with computer opponents filling the remaining roster. The competition is organized into six programs, each containing a set of two or three distinct athletic events alongside a multi-stage marathon.

Gameplay across most events relies on timed button presses, requiring either rapid input or rhythmic precision to execute actions like running, jumping, and swimming. The marathon is a strategic departure, played in segments where players must manage a runner's speed and energy based on course maps and condition reports to avoid exhaustion. Several events, such as the hurdles, javelin, and long jump, incorporate a risk of fouling if the player's timing at a critical line is incorrect.

Athletic disciplines are grouped thematically. Programs feature combinations of track events like dashes and relays, field events including shot put and high jump, and swimming strokes such as freestyle and butterfly. The final program combines a swimming relay with a track relay. Outside the main competition, a Training mode allows for individual practice of every sport except the marathon. The game saves any new world records achieved by the player to battery-backed memory for future reference.
