About A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES is a platforming game where players, as teenagers, must locate and destroy Freddy Krueger's remains. The objective involves searching houses along Elm Street to collect bones, which are then disposed of in a school furnace to permanently defeat the antagonist.

Gameplay alternates between two distinct states. One state features a red hue and common platforming obstacles with enemies like snakes and spiders. Here, a sleep meter decreases when the player is hit. If this meter empties, the player enters a blue-tinted dream world where foes transform into skeletal and ghostly forms. This shift initiates a hidden timer leading to an unavoidable confrontation with Freddy Krueger. In the dream world, the sleep meter functions as a traditional life bar, and losing all of it costs the player a life.

Players can acquire special abilities by finding icons within the dream world, granting them projectile attacks and enhanced powers useful against Freddy. Each house level concludes with a boss fight against a creature bearing Freddy's likeness or signature weapon. Progress is made by clearing houses sequentially, which unlocks subsequent locations on the street. The game supports multiplayer for up to four participants simultaneously via a specific accessory.
