Days of Thunder

Review

Race on 8 oval tracks, manage pit stops, and compete against rivals in this NASCAR adaptation.

Days of Thunder for Game Boy was released in 1990 by Mindscape, based on the 1990 film. The original game version was also released in 1990 on other platforms such as NES and DOS.

About Days of Thunder

Days of Thunder adapts the NASCAR racing film into a game that emphasizes track variety and pit strategy. Players control a character inspired by the film's protagonist across eight oval circuits modeled on real locations.

The racing requires adaptation, as each track's unique layout demands a different optimal line. A qualifying session is part of the event structure. During a race, the player must occasionally manage a pit stop, directly controlling a five member crew; any time lost here can drop positions. This pit stop mechanic presents a challenging element, as competing drivers do not make similar stops.

While using licenses from the film, the gameplay functions more as a general NASCAR simulation than a direct scene for scene retelling. The player's rivals and the protagonist have names altered from their real life racing counterparts.
