Backyard Football 2006 for the Game Boy Advance presents a simplified, cartoon-style take on American football, designed with a younger audience in mind. It is the second entry in its series for the platform and features official NFL licensing alongside original teams.

The game offers a variety of play modes, from single exhibition matches to full seasons and practice sessions. Team composition is a notable feature, allowing for the creation of custom characters or a draft-style selection process where players and the computer alternate picks. Matches can include optional animated commentary sequences before and after play.

On the field, the perspective is a side-scrolling view from the sideline. Player actions often involve a timing-based power meter, requiring precise input to determine the strength of a pass, kick, or tackle. The game presents a fair challenge through three selectable difficulty levels and options to toggle elements like power-ups and player fatigue. Strategic depth is maintained by allowing play changes after key moments and by always suggesting a recommended move.

Beyond core gameplay, there is significant customization. A total of 51 teams are available, split between NFL squads and exclusive Backyard teams, organized into conferences and regional groups. Players are defined by individual statistics across several skills, and matches can be set in different environments with sunny or rainy weather conditions.
