About Speedback
Speedback was one of those games you'd find buried in the Flash Classic era, a time when simple mechanics and quick sessions were the norm. It captured the straightforward appeal of American football without the complexity of a full simulation.
You control a lone running back, starting from your own end zone. The goal is to carry the ball all the way to the opposite end of the field for a touchdown. You move with the arrow keys, weaving through a scattered defense. The A key lets you deliver a stiff-arm to push a defender aside, while the S key triggers a spin move to slip past a tackle. You can only use each special move once per possession, so timing is crucial. The pacing is relentless; defenders close in quickly, and the field feels longer with every yard. It feels like a tense, solitary sprint where one mistake ends the drive.
