About Sonic Stars Race 2
Sonic Stars Race 2 was one of those games you'd find on a Flash gaming site in the late 2000s. It fit right in with the era's simple, fast paced fan games that used familiar characters. You picked it up for a quick race, not expecting anything too complicated.
You control one of four characters, like Sonic or Knuckles, from a top down perspective. The main goal is to finish first in a series of races across tracks that look like Green Hill Zone. Moment to moment, you're steering around tight corners and trying to avoid bumping into the walls, which slows you down. You can collect stars scattered on the track; gathering enough lets you activate a temporary upgrade, like a speed boost or a shield. Another mechanic lets you fire a laser to briefly freeze opponents ahead of you. The pacing is frantic, with the computer racers keeping close, and the difficulty comes from managing your speed on the narrow tracks while timing your power ups. It feels like a hectic, slightly chaotic scramble to the finish line.
