Following the overthrow of a dictator, the protagonist Twinsen has established a peaceful domestic life. This tranquility is disrupted when an injured friend leads to the discovery of unusual atmospheric phenomena and the arrival of extraterrestrial beings. Their intentions are unclear, prompting Twinsen to undertake another journey to protect his world.

The game is an adventure title incorporating action components. Players navigate a sizable world, engaging with characters and environmental elements, with some optional content available. Progression relies on utilizing four distinct behavioral stances appropriately within various scenarios.

Visual presentation combines an isometric view for interior spaces with an exterior environment rendered in three dimensions. The outdoor camera can be rotated, a change from the previous installment. The control scheme and interface remain consistent with the earlier game.
